about

In 1981, Dennis Gonzalez traveled to Munich to visit with JAPO Records' Executive Producer Thomas Stowsand. In the course of their conversation, Stowsand gave Gonzalez an LP by the Elton Dean Quintet, called "Boundaries". In the six years that followed, Gonzalez planned, along with a South African friend living in London, John Gardiner, this 1987 session with the musicians on "Boundaries": the late Soft Machine saxophonist Elton Dean; pianist Keith Tippett - whose work on King Crimson's "Islands" was an influence on Gonzalez's listening; expatriate South African Drummer Louis Moholo; Brazilian contrabassist Marcio Mattos; as well as Americans Rob Blakeslee on trumpet and Kim Corbet on trombone.
